Adam "@Apelad" Koford did a set of Twitter avatar designs based on the outline of the default Twitter bird. Inspired by his geniousity, i tried to make the same thing by my own. here are some avatars i've done so far.

11th Phinastika Award 2010 Animated Opening Sequence

One of the biggest advertising events in my hometown, the 11th Phinastika award was held last month in Prambanan temple, Kalasan, Yogyakarta. The event was awesomely and beautifully wrapped with some kind of live traditional dancing performance and digital CG combination shown on the stage's big screen . I took my part as the main animator and motion graphic artist for its opening sequence. Although the show was cool, I can't say that it was well planned. the opening sequence was made for less than 12 hours. It nearly killed me.

3D Animation Walkcycles

The walk cycle is one of the most important learning concepts in animation--and also one of the most technically difficult, because it requires so much attention to the movement of opposing limbs. The contact poses play important role in building walkcycle. This is the fundamental building block of a walk cycle. If you do not start your cycle with this pose, then you are doomed. I put these walkcycle trials in the first weeks of 3d animation learning after the bouncing ball:

Pak Blangkon: JogjaTV’s Official Mascot

The character in Javanese traditional suit on the left side is Pak Blangkon, an official mascot of Jogja TV, a local TV station I'm working at. My boss gave me this task when I was in the first month of my work time. It’s a kind of hard thing for me to have such huge responsibility where everything was totally new for me. However, with some helps and advices from some work mates of mine, it could be done with no real obstacles.

The challenge was I had to create a character that brings Jogjakarta people’s stereotypes on his appearance. I’ve made two different sketches in creating this character. The first rough sketch of Pak Blangkon is pretty different from the second one. The last sketch has a chubbier look on his face; this is my effort to bring a friendly look on him, the head is also seemingly more pointing upward because I believe this can bring a wise aura, and to give him more polite look, I will always show him smiling. From now, Pak Blangkon will star a lot of JogjaTV’s public service and greeting advertisements.

My Wonderful world: A Green Ad.

A fellow of mine asked me to participate in a green ad festival held by WALHI. He gave me the concept, and I worked it for about two weeks. As usual, the work was made with my traditional technique, 2D. The hardest part this time was the Tarzan’s swinging motion; jumping and catching roots, working with a lot of layers and no movieclip. Surely, it’s a real kind of ass busting!! This is also my first time in using flash layer masking; you can see it on Tarzan’s sunglasses reflection. One of my favorite works. Great song by Louis Armstrong, and great concept in my opinion by El Tomo. Thanks to El Tomo.

Moon Safari: A One Day Long Ass Busting

One of my friends who’s studying at an advertising science academy asked me a help to create an ad for one of his assignments. The theme should be dealing with Virgin’s moon safari project. So, here if you think that it’s an official advertisement of Virgin Company, then you’re totally wrong. It’s just an assignment. The concept itself is very different like it was. At first, he wanted me to show stars, planets, spaceships, and some other stuffs in the video. But because of the “unfriendly deadline” (Just 24 hours long!), I changed the entire concept into the more simple story.

These are two short videos I made for Johnnie Walker Red Label’s Animation competition contest. Although both of them didn't give me any trophy, I’m happy with them. As you can see, the videos have a red dominant color. It has nothing to do with the stories. It's just a part of the contest regulation. However, the red color has given them an artistic look. I love red things.

Orang Asing-Iklan Layanan Masyarakat FAN 2007

Iklan layanan masyarakat (ILM) ini berjudul Orang Asing. Kubuat untuk festival animasi nasional(FAN) 2007 yang digelar di Yogyakarta september 2007 kemarin. Durasinya lumayan pendek, 30 detik, sesuai dengan syarat durasi yang diwajibkan untuk kategori perorangan. Para tokoh dan karakter yang ada didalam video ini pun adalah karakter-karakter yang disediakan oleh panitia dan wajib digunakan. Proses pembuatannya makan waktu sekitar satu setengah minggu. Hal yang paling sulit dalam pengerjaannya adalah penyusunan dan penataan suara. Karena dikejar batas waktu pengumpulan, aku nggak sempat mencari pengisi suara, sehingga terpaksa hampir 2 hari penuh kuhabiskan waktuku duduk didepan TV untuk mencari dan merekam suara yang pas buat videonya. Syukurlah, karena pada akhirnya ILM ini berhasil meraih juara pertama untuk kategori perorangan. Untuk isinya, aku nggak akan bercerita banyak. Silahkan teman-teman lihat sendiri.

How to Vectorize Your Sketch

I get quite a few emails from people wanting to know what software I use to create my cartoon illustrations… most are surprised when I tell them I produce about 95% of my work directly in Flash. Below is how I generally create my illustration. I start with a scanned pencil sketch and trace over it in Flash using primarily the “line” and “selection” tools, along with the occasional pencil stroke.

Remember the first time you learned to use a mouse? Or to tie your shoes? These tasks seem so simple now, but some things are just plain easier after someone shows you how. It's the "not knowing where to start" that can be frustrating. Enjoy!

Open Flash application installed on your computer (Currently I use Adobe Flash CS3, but it also works with MX 2004 or below), create a new document, and import your sketch image file to the stage (see figure 1). Lock the layer (figure 2) and convert it to a guide layer (If you convert the layer to a guide layer, it will not be exported with the rest of the illustration contents. Because a guide layer is not included upon export, it's a cool way to retain the assets in your illustration that you otherwise would not want to delete from the Stage. To convert a layer to a guide layer, right-click the area containing the layer name and select Guide in the context menu (figure3)).

Insert a new layer and trace your sketch lines by using line tool (key N). Click your mouse and drag the lines over the sketch. Each time you draw a line, place your cursor above the middle of the line, click, hold, drag, and adjust it with your pencil sketch line (Figure 4).

After you finish tracing the lines, Adjust your outline’s thickness using the properties panel that is placed below the screen window (figure 5). If you want to delete some unused lines, you can do it by using selection tool (key V).

Give your character some colors with paint bucket tool (key K) (figure 6).

Save your project and export it to an image file.
